Help Your Staff Thrive in High Stress Environments: Pre and Post-Assignment Resilience Consultations

November 4, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

In the international development, humanitarian and emergency management fields, staff are often called upon to work in difficult locations. Often, leaving family and friends behind, staff members selflessly travel to some of the most complex and challenging environments in the world. The ability to bounce back from difficulty and navigate change with strength and vitality are central to employees’ success and the ability of an organization to meet its goals.

Preparing staff before they embark on an assignment, providing support during the assignment, and checking in with them at the conclusion of their assignment, is critical to ensure staff resilience. The ability to bounce back from difficulty and navigate change with strength and vitality are central to employees’ success and the ability of an organization to meet its goals.

Increasing focus by many NGOs on psychosocial support for staff, particularly proactive support that concentrates on personal resilience, has led many organizations to adopt structured, proactive pre- and post-assignment consultations for staff.

Although increasingly common, there remains great variation in the design and delivery of such consultations.  This interactive webinar will provide an opportunity for LINGOS members to:

  • Hear case studies about several large NGOs and how they have approached consultations in recent events, including staff deploying to the earthquake in Nepal, Ebola response in West Africa, and the Syria response in the Middle East.
  • Learn about various approaches to pre- and post-deployment resilience consultations, and how they are structured and delivered, using both mandatory and optional models.
  • Learn how smaller, development-oriented NGOs are incorporating resilience consultations into their assignment cycle, for both international and senior national staff.
  • Learn about the content of the consultations, trends across NGO staff members, common concerns and challenges.
  • Share best practices in the provision of support.
